I think TTY's have already crashed and burned with the advent of IM's, Sidekicks, and e-mail.

Colleges are universities are required by law to have tty machines.

That's just you, though, Jasin; I was just saying why a lot of TDD's are kept.

If I can call 911 from a video then why can't other deaf? Sorenson, one of the largest vrs's and video phone providers, actually says on their site: "You can use Sorenson VRS (SVRS) to make 911 emergency calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All 911 emergency calls made through Sorenson VRS receive priority attention-your 911 call will be immediately sent to the first available interpreter."

Actually, even dialling 911 will get the police over within a heartbeat. I need not speak in the phone.

Or I can wait 2 minutes for the computer to boot, 20 seconds for the VRS software to boot, 20 seconds to get an interpreter, 15 seconds to connect to a 911 operator...

Some people can be funny.

No need for all that when I can use my video phone. Besides, explaining things through an interpreter on a video phone is far more helpful. Cops and/or Medical aid will already know what they are dealing with before hand and can prepare.

I was referring to using the videophone to dial 911.. it takes forever.

Just dialing 911, the cops will be here within a minute or I can spend a minute getting on the videophone and then there's the conversation of about 3 minutes, then a total of FIVE minutes later, the cops are here.

I'll stay with dialing 911 - much more efficient.

No landline here. Hopefully soon all police will start to have 911 set up for text. It is happening in some places. :huh2:

You can dial 911 from your cell phone and not say a word and they will find you. :vibraphone: It does not matter what the circumstances they send everyone- fire, police, and the paramedics.

It doesn't matter if don't need a fire truck you will get one anyway. They don't want to waste time "talking on the phone" when they can dispatch units on the spot.

That's the exact same reason why I see no reason to use videophones to call 911 - will take much longer while the operators try to figure out what you need.

For phones that have that feature, and not all do, they have to triangulate your location and that's not an exact location of where you are that's an around about where you are. Not all deaf have cell phones too. I know many who do not. Some just can't afford that monthly fee, especially in these times.

Correct, it's off by about 150 feet, not entirely accurate.

That is the VERY reason why I still have my landline.

Actually its 100 meters. http://www.webopedia...ERM/E/E911.html

That's 328.08399 feet. That's a little over one nfl football field in length.

My video phone is free, your land line is not :)

And that high-speed internet connection costs you... ? :) You can't win either way.

If an emergency did occur, the fastest method is still dialing 911 and hanging up.

Or waste 10 valuable minutes talking with the relay agent, explaining to the 911 operator, etc.

We should do a poll here.. who would use VRS to call 911 or simply dial 911.

It cost me 30 dollars. The same as a phone line would cost me. In addition, without it I would not have internet which I need for other things. Phone lines in this house and community are to old to support high speed internet or even dialup for that matter. The phone guy came out and inspected the lines and told me so. He says until the upgrad the main junction box out at the highway that it will be this way for a long time. Oh, and I do not know tty, which is currently the only way a deaf can use regular landlines phone lines when he or she is as deaf as me. So even if its cheaper, which its not, it wouldn't help me anyways.

I love my video phone and would not give it up for anything. My video phone is a God send. I can actually see other deaf, friends mostly, signing to me. I can understand what they are saying very clearly. They can even show me things on the video phone.. objects or things related to our conversation. You do not get that or have that with tty, captel, text messaging, etc.

The fastest method is not regular land line. The fastest method would be to text 911. Not all places have that yet though, sadly so. Cell phone texting is very, very fast. I know deaf kids that can text faster then you could pickup a phone and hang it up and that's no joke. Lets not forget too, that in some situations you do need to explain what is going on. Its impractical too, to just send every kind of emergency aid that exist to you when you only need one kind of aid. It takes resources from other areas and people who need those other kind of aids.
